What is Sedation Dentistry?

Seeing your friendly neighborhood pediatric dentist shouldn’t be stressful!

At Smile Surfers in Sumner, we strive to make your children’s dental appointments more pleasant by utilizing positive behavioral tactics, establishing a comfortable environment, and more!

We recognize that some little surfers are much more comfortable with dental appointments than others, which is why we like everyone to know that sedation options are available!

Sedation is a fantastic way to give your little surfer peace of mind while they’re at the dentist. If your child has one of the following conditions, sedation dentistry may be very advantageous to them:

  • Severe dental anxiety
  • Trouble sitting still
  • Special needs
  • Multiple treatments

If you’re interested in sedation dentistry for your child, please contact us! We’d be happy to go over options with you.

Dental Visits Can Be A Breeze!

Sedation dentistry can help your kiddo in a variety of ways!

Overcome Fears

Sedation dentistry is a type of treatment that helps your child build up trust in the dentist and dental treatments, helping them to overcome obstacles and establish healthy, long-term dental habits.

Relax

Sedation may make your child’s dentist appointment go a lot more smoothly. When you’re ready, settle your kiddo in a peaceful mood to ensure that they don’t get sidetracked by fears about what will happen throughout the visit.

Complete Treatment

This technique may allow our pediatric dentists to complete more procedures in one session and reduce the need for follow-up visits. This would be ideal if your child struggles with dental visits.

Are There Different Options for Sedation?

Find the treatment type that works best for your wonderfully unique child!

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, sometimes known as laughing gas, is a mild kind of sedation.

It’s given through a nosepiece to make your little surfer feel more comfortable throughout their treatment. Sedation levels may vary based on your child’s state of relaxation.

When you use nitrous oxide, your child will be awake and able to communicate and/or follow the dentist’s directions during the procedure.

General Anesthesia

Anesthesia, particularly general anesthesia, is a strong sedative given by an anesthesiologist. It might be required for your child, although it is determined by the following circumstances:

  • Their needs
  • The extent of the process
  • The services needed
  • Their age

While your child is with us, they will be watched closely to guarantee that they are fully safe. After the treatment, they will have no memory of the event.

Making Your Visit More Enjoyable!

We've got a lot of interesting information for you!

Is there a specific type of sedation that's better for my child?

The type and number of treatments necessary, as well as your child’s individual circumstances, will influence the response to this question.

Please contact us if you think dental sedation may be appropriate for your child’s circumstances.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes, we take safety seriously, which is why we only work with licensed anesthesiologists who are MD’s. They will monitor your little surfer carefully at all times and make any necessary adjustments based on their comfort level. Your child’s safety is always a priority. In all cases, we strictly follow sedation guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

How much can I expect to pay for sedation dentistry?

The overall cost will be determined by the type of sedative used, the treatment(s), and your insurance policy.

Please contact your local Smile Surfers office for a fee estimate and to discuss your payment possibilities. Everyone is different, and we’d be delighted to assist you with anything you need!

How long does nitrous oxide last?

We’ll switch off the laughing gas as soon as we’re done, and the effects will begin to fade immediately. It usually just takes a couple of minutes, but it could take up to 30 minutes.

Following their appointment, your little surfer should be able to go back to school!
